My Experience At A Bank: Can I Just Get A Welcoming Smile, woman?

I’d like to apologise to women first before I continue writing. I have nothing against women, my mum is a wonderful woman, and I have amazing sisters, friends, cousins, aunties, etc. Oh by the way I am a woman :) phwee Ok here I go:

When it comes to working environment, women are not my favourite people. There is this aggression that some of us posess that make me wonder how others cope with us at home.

I made a phone call today to a bank branch manager, she answered nicely until I told her it had to do with a service her bank provided then her voice changed (not in a nice way). I walked into her office and she looked at me with a “not welcoming” look. Though I was very well dressed and knew that my Ferragamo perfume could make anyone try to get my number or follow me home, but not this woman, it didn't make her even fake a smile, I was surprised she offered me a seat.

She took me to another lady who she said would sort me out. I don't know who was worse, whether it was the bank’s branch manager or the customer service woman. No eye contact, no smile, nothing. She was just there pretending to be attending to me when in fact she was doing something else (I saw her holding a receipt with somebody else's name). She stood up several times without even saying “excuse me” or, “I will be with you shortly”, little words make a difference sometimes especially if you are a customer service representative. Her note pad fell beside me (by the way not my fault at all) I picked it up for her and this lady couldn't even open her mouth to say thank you. At that time I could already sense her aggression and I knew for sure that my ferragammo perfume would not make her nicer if anything it would make her get more aggressive. So, I decided not to expect much from her in order not to get further disappointed, like always I made a very good decision.

She put a book infront of me to sign, and said " here, your name, signature and date, where is your ID?" What kind of a human being is this? I laughed in my head. lol!

No manners whatsoever! I couldn't blame her she obviously didn’t have that much of a person to look up to. She dropped my ID back on the table, thank God I saw it when she did, would have lost it there and I would trust her to give me great attitude if I returned to ask her for it.

She finally sorted me out. I can't remember if she accepted my thanks or not. I didn't really care. I only felt sorry for their bank and her future as a customer service manager.

Have you ever had an experience like mine with women? or are women overly percieved as aggressive at work? what are you thoughts on this?

Do you have a customer service experience or a review you would like to share? If so, Contact me by sending a message to spynaija@gmail.com

  1. It is interesting that u're writing on a topic my dad n I talked abt jst yestday. Customer service in nigeria is very very poor, did I say poor? With a capital P.let's not even talk about female service providers! Is it @ d restuarant, salon, bank, boutique, airport, hospital, they're all the same. Very rude, saucy and mannerless especially 2 other women. I find it quite pathetic cos its a small world they jst neva knw where we'll meet again. Might I add dat my friend( african american) who came visitng last year, says she's neva coming here again bcos of our bad customer service, (even er phonetics didn't make dem nice 2 er, lol!) Nigerian service providers especially women need ettiquette classes, dey really need to wrk on deir attitude. Nice post!

  3. ...... this is why I do not go into banking halls. On top of the fact that I'm doing the bank a favour by stashing my money with them, they don't see the reason for urgency and that's why you see queues in banks. Online banking is the best thing to have happened since sliced bread! The Lush has spoken ...!

  4. As I always say, women are their own worst enemies. There is a special place in hell for women who do not help other women, in fact who do not even help anyone.

There really is no customer service culture in Nigeria, it's a case of if you are not happy with my service someone else will come. I have asked several cashiers and customer service reps at banks that 'where do u think uk salary comes from' it is from the COT your bank charges on my account every month so in other words I pay your salary the least u can do is to be polite.

    1. LOLL!@"There is a special place in hell for women who do not help other women, in fact who do not even help anyone".... May God deliever us women o! I think people in Nigeria are used to accepting crap services, only a few people voice out their dissatisfaction. If the majority are ok with accepting crap, then the service providers are thinking, so do you have two heads? why cant you just accept it? they ignore you and move on to other people, because they know more people will come. very annoying!

    2. Too funny re special place in hell for women...! You only get served in Nig if you know someone, if you don't, nothing for you, lol! So my strategy is to ENSURE I KNOW PEOPLE, so I always get served :).

    1. Maybe your legs looked nice in the shorts loll (just kidding)I guess sometimes we can get lucky and meet a really nice person. lolll @ "spraying them with AK47". They need to shut down UBA and re-train their staff before people start committing murder lol. I have heard so many stories about their nonchalant attitude. It's disturbing! My experience was at a Sterling bank in Ikeja.

  9. Thanks for this post. I remember going on low cut a few years back because I could not handle paying heavily at salons and having to beg just to get my hair done. When I got tired of the attitude of these hair dressers, I went on low cut for as long as one year.

    I work better with men!

    1. Hi Eya,I honestly know what you mean, those hair stylists are something else, they can be soooo annoying. I don't think they realise that it's the money we pay to make our hair that makes up their salary. At least for one year you enjoyed your hair with no attitude from any hair dresser lol. I actually like male hair stylists better. Thanks for reading Eya :)
